Defrosting Tips
When defrosting do not use a electrical heating device, or a sharp object to remove frost from your freezer, as this could damage your freezer’s inner lining.
The best way to defrost your freezer is to either do a manual defrost or an automatic defrost.
For a manual defrost:
- 1. Unplug the unit and keep the door open to prevent ice build-up.
- 2. Remove all food items from the freezer, and store them in coolers with ice packs.
- 3. Place a pan of hot water inside the freezer (below the frozen portion) and let it sit for 10 minutes or until frost starts melting off.
- 4. Use a plastic spatula or spoon to scrape off any remaining frost from walls and shelves of the freezer until completely defrosted.
- 5. Wipe down interior surfaces with warm soapy water.
- 6. Plug the unit back in and turn it on.
- 7. Once defrosted, add food items back in the freezer.
For an automatic defrost:
- 1. Set the temperature to its lowest setting for 24 hours to defrost any frost build-up automatically.
- 2. After 24 hours, wipe down interior surfaces with warm soapy water and set the temperature to its normal setting.
- 3. Add food items back in the freezer once defrosted completely.
New refrigerators don’t require defrosting as much as an older refrigerator or freezer. But it also gives you a chance to clean out your freezer and throw out any freezer burned foods.
Ideally, defrost your freezer every 6-12 months or when the frost build-up exceeds 1/4 inch. This will help maintain the optimal cooling performance and energy efficiency of your freezer. Also, defrosting can help prevent any potential problems such as odors, uneven cooling, and poor drainage.
Following the above tips should ensure that defrosting your freezer is done quickly, safely, and efficiently. Defrosting at regular intervals allows you to keep your freezer running smoothly and keeps food fresh for longer. By defrosting regularly, you can also save money on energy bills in the long run!
